Procera AVH Memory Supplement Review

Our original review is below, but first…

Important Update! In the spring of 2012, a class action suit (O’Brien, et al. v. Brain Research Labs, LLC) was filed against Brain Research Labs, the manufacturer of Procera AVH, for false advertising and marketing statements . This product also has received numerous customer service complaints. For these reasons, we don’t recommend it. See which are our top-rated memory supplements in our comprehensive “Be Smart” Brain Supplement Guide

An Excellent Alternative to Procera AVH

wellness resources super brain boosterThe active ingredients in Procera AVH are not unique to this product, so I set out to find a product with similar ingredients from a reputable company that I could wholeheartedly endorse instead. Wellness Resources Super Brain Booster definitely meets these requirements.

Super Brain Booster contains vinpocetine, acetyl-l-tyrosine, Alpha GPC, and bacopa, a traditional memory herb. It can help with focus, memory, learning, and general cognitive health — at a significant cost savings over Procera AVH. ;-)

wellness resources super brain boosterWellness Resources has been owned and operated by clinical nutritionist Byron Richards and his family since 1985. Over the past 28 years he has helped tens of thousands of people improve their health naturally at his practice. During this time, he has continued to perfect his supplements to get real results for his patients.

Richards is a renowned nutrition expert and author who does a weekly podcast on various health topics. The company has a BBB rating of A+. Their supplements are manufactured in the US and follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

I feel very confident recommending Super Brain Booster as a replacement for Procera AVH. Learn more about the product and the company.

Still interested in Procera? Here is our original review:

Procera AVH is a memory and brain supplement that’s the product of Brain Research Labs and co-founders Joseph Heller and Joshua Reynolds who, between them, have over 40 years experience in the brain health field.

Joseph Heller, MD is a Professor of Medicine at UCLA Medical Center. He has practiced medicine for over 30 years and is considered an expert in brain health and fitness.

Joshua Reynolds is a cognitive clinical research scientist considered to be a pioneer in the field of brain and cognitive performance. He has developed brain tests used by top medical schools, including Stanford University. He has several patents for cognitive testing technology. He is the author of 20/20 Brain Power, an acclaimed book on brain performance and enhancement.

To develop a product that would improve brain function, Heller and Reynolds claim they tested hundreds of natural ingredients on thousands of volunteers over a period of 20 years before coming up with the current formulation for Procera AVH.

Active Ingredients

Procera AVH contains three ingredients, all with their own brain-boosting properties.

  • Vinpocetine increases circulation to the brain and is a potent antioxidant.
  • Huperzine A is sourced from Chinese club moss and protects brain cells from free radicals. It also protects acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter.
  • Acetyl-l-carnitine has been shown to improve mental clarity, focus, mood and memory, and possibly slow brain aging.

Side Effects & Warnings

It is noted on the product’s website that if you are taking any prescription medications, specifically blood thinners, MAO inhibitors, or anti-psychotic medications, you should talk to your doctor before taking this (or any nutritional supplement). The same advice applies if you have epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or low blood pressure.

Procera AVH Customer Experiences

I always look beyond the manufacturer’s testimonials for independent, reputable sites where real customers can report their experiences with the product. Here are two typical comments — one good and bad:

My father had Alzheimer’s, and with him, there was a significant improvement in his cognitive abilities. He was more coherent, and actually engaging, whereas before he would sit quietly, never speaking or contributing to the conversation.
Jeremy Needle, Los Angeles, CA – Amazon.com

Some of the reviews indicate that Procera has poor customer service. I have to agree. I called, and no one called me back. I wrote, and no one wrote me back. I wrote again and got an inadequate answer from the customer service rep. I complained about the quality of some tablets in my first box, and they didn’t seem concerned. THAT is an issue. Quality control and customer service should be their #1 concern.
Bella, Burbank, CA – Amazon.com

The Bottom Line

Procera AVH contains ingredients that could offer cognitive benefits. The creators have the credentials to create a top-notch product. But have they?

This product has had significant customer service issues and claims of false advertising made against it. For these reasons, we don’t recommend it. Why take a chance when you can do so much better?

      Hi Robert,

I’m sorry for all that you are and your wife must be going through. I would advise against Procera for her. The manufacturer specifically warns against taking with blood thinners. However, there are many other brain supplement alternatives. I’m going to give you three to choose from that I think would be very useful for your wife situation. For your wife’s situation, I would recommend looking into Neurobiologix brain support products, particularly their Memory Sustain supplement. NeuroBiologix makes pharmaceutical grade supplements and is an outgrowth of a medical practice which specializes in Alzheimer’s, dementia, ADD, and brain injuries. These products were designed to be used with their patients, and now are available online.

I think everyone should take is an omega 3 fatty acid supplement. The brain is largely made up of DHA and without it the brain will never function at its best. Taking it has been found to help people with dementia, Alzheimer’s and garden variety memory decline. The best is found to be krill oil. I recommended brand Prograde EFA Icon. One of the biggest causes of mental decline is free radical damage to the brain. That can be helped with a potent antioxidant supplement. For this you can’t do better than Prograde Longevity. Read more about both of these products in my review here.

Take a look at these and talk to her about them and see if any of these resonate with her. I truly hope you find something that will help. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts.

      best wishes, Deane

P.S.Robert, I did try to email you personally, but my email to you didn’t go through.
